About School
St. Thomas’ Church School, Howrah, is one of the largest and most prestigious educational institutions in the region. Established between 1860 and 1865 by Rev. Dr. William Spencer, Chaplain of St. Thomas’ Church, the school was originally founded to provide quality education to Anglo-Indian children. Over the years, it has evolved into an inclusive institution that welcomes students from all sections of society, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion.
The school operates under the guidance of an efficient Board of Governors as per its constitution, with His Grace, The Bishop of Calcutta, serving as the Chairman. Our sprawling campus, covering nearly 6 bighas and 17 kathas, features spacious and well-ventilated classrooms, advanced science laboratories, a well-stocked library, staff rooms, a computer lab, a music room, and an art room. Additionally, we provide ample playgrounds for the holistic development of our students.
Academically, St. Thomas’ Church School follows the ICSE and ISC curriculum, offering both Science and Commerce streams for students appearing in the ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) examinations. The academic year is divided into two terms: April to September and October to March, with vacations during Summer, Puja, and Christmas. Our students participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities, fostering both academic excellence and personal growth.
The school shares a deep historical and spiritual connection with St. Thomas’ Church, which was built in 1830 and consecrated in 1832 by Bishop Daniel Wilson. Constructed in stunning Gothic architectural style by William Jones, the church has been a beacon of faith and worship in the Howrah district. It continues to play a pivotal role in the school’s daily activities, hosting morning assemblies, special school events, and significant commemorations such as Patronal Day, Teachers’ Day, and the Prefects’ Investiture Ceremony.
In addition to its role in education, the Church oversees various religious institutions in the region, including Sadhu Sunder Singh Girja, St. Luke’s Church (Boikhali), Prabhu Jishu Girja (Medinipur, Geon Khali), and Christ Church (Liluah). These institutions, under the Calcutta Diocese, extend the spiritual and social mission of the Church to communities across Hooghly and Howrah districts.
With a legacy spanning over 180 years, St. Thomas’ Church School remains committed to the ideals of faith, education, and service. As we look forward to future milestones, we remain grateful for the divine guidance that continues to inspire our journey, always remembering that ‘all things come from Him and of His own do we give unto Him’.
