St. Helen's Secondary School Kurseong

Founded in 1890 by the visionary Mother Marie Therese, the journey of St. Helen's Secondary School is a testament to resilience and dedication to education amidst historical adversities. The school's inception during turbulent times saw it initially housed in a rented property called "Charleville, " with a humble enrollment of 12 pupils.

Rapid growth became evident as the number of pupils soared to 39 within months, necessitating a larger space. "Helensborough, " acquired from the Jesuit Fathers, became the new abode in May 1891, fostering a nurturing environment for growth and learning. In this phase, spiritedness, simplicity, and earnestness defined the budding generation's ethos.

The school's commitment to academic excellence shone through as students were successfully presented for Government Middle and High School Examinations, reflecting the efficiency of the teaching staff.

Challenges arose, including the outbreak of diphtheria and a devastating earthquake, prompting the school to seek a more spacious and secure location. Undeterred, Mother Marie exhibited immense determination, acquiring a sizeable property named "Caledonia." The task of establishing a large boarding school on rocky terrain was daunting, but her perseverance prevailed. In February 1900, St. Helen's relocated to its present location at Caledonia, marking a new chapter in its legacy.

Over the years, St. Helen's Secondary School has stood tall, maintaining its commitment to academic excellence and character-building. Presently, under the guidance of Superior Sr. M. Rufina, F.C., and Principal Sr. Dominica, F.C., the institution continues its relentless pursuit of academic distinction and moral fortitude, upholding its motto - "DIEU ET MON DEVOIR" (God and my Duty).

Today, with 116 years of history, St. Helen's Secondary School stands as a beacon of academic achievement, fostering an environment where dedication, resilience, and commitment to education continue to thrive.
