About School

The genesis of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, a global Missionary Congregation, can be traced back to the indomitable spirit of Euphraise Barbier, a visionary woman who ignited her calling on 25th December 1861 in Lyons, France. Born into devout Catholic roots in Caen, France, on 4th January 1829, Euphraise's fervor to serve God and humanity burgeoned from a tender age.

Her journey to actualize this fervent dream took pivotal turns when, in 1848, she joined the Sisters of Calvary, anticipating her destiny. Yet, the true embodiment of her life's purpose unfolded when the Marist Fathers summoned her aid in preparing young women for missions in New Zealand.

Under Euphraise Barbier's stewardship, the Institute de Notre Dame de Mission took form in December 1861 in Lyon, France. This establishment was dedicated to educating and nurturing children and women in Christian values.

Euphraise's visionary zeal bore fruit as she dispatched the inaugural missionaries to New Zealand in 1864, subsequently expanding the Congregation's presence to diverse corners like Australia, England, Wallis, Tonga, Samoa, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

Spanning 24 countries globally, the Congregation champions missions among the marginalized, especially women and children. Its footprint in India, with 20 schools and a college spanning Meghalaya to Kerala, stands as a testament to its commitment to providing quality education and social services to varied communities.

Euphraise Barbier, fondly remembered as 'The little Mother, ' lived a life adorned with enthusiasm despite encountering myriad challenges as the Foundress. Her depth of spirituality, reflected in her gentleness, simplicity, humility, and boundless generosity, left an indelible mark.

In her final moments, grappling with illness, Euphraise's unwavering dedication to the Institute remained steadfast until her peaceful passing on 18th January 1893, at the age of 64.

Marking 160 years of its inception, the RNDMs remain resolute in upholding Euphraise's vision to 'extend the Kingdom of God.' The Our Lady Queen of the Missions School in Kolkata, burgeoning from a humble start in 1946 to a full-fledged ICSE & ISC School with a branch in Salt Lake, continues to sculpt the futures of over 1500 young women, a testament to Euphraise Barbier's enduring legacy.
