Goethals Memorial School

The commemoration of the revered Most Rev. Dr. Paul Count Goethals, SJ, Archbishop of Calcutta, in 1901 led to the establishment of an educational institution for boys in Kurseong. In February 1907, classes commenced in the impressive building overseen by the inaugural Principal, Br M.S. O’Brien (1907-1914), with an initial cohort of 110 boys in residence. The official inauguration occurred on April 30th, 1907. Initially aligned with the Shibpore Bengal Engineering College, Calcutta, the curriculum later transitioned from the Sub Overseer Course to the esteemed senior Cambridge program.

The school maintained its affiliation with the Cambridge exams until the 1970s when it shifted its focus to the I.C.S.E. curriculum, maintaining consistently high standards. Subsequently, in 2013, the school earned accreditation from the C.I.S.C.E. for I.S.C. courses.

Throughout its journey, Goethals has upheld a philosophy encompassing both work and play, ensuring a balanced approach to education. The integration of games into the curriculum complemented academic pursuits without overshadowing them.

Proudly rooted in its distinguished legacy and traditions, Goethals owes much of its success to a cadre of illustrious teachers and principals. Through their unwavering dedication and adept leadership, Goethals has emerged as one of the premier educational institutions in the district.

Furthermore, Goethals achieved another milestone with the inclusion and recognition of the National Open School for both boys and girls, further enriching the institution's academic landscape.
