Overview
The recent rule change by CBSE has raised concerns about the future of Urdu medium students.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently proposed not evaluating students' writing in a medium other than Hindi or English. This proposal has raised concerns for students of Kamran MANUU Model School, an Urdu medium school in Bihar's Darbhanga. The proposal suggests that answer books of students writing in a language other than Hindi or English, without prior approval from the board, shall not be evaluated, and their results will be declared without awarding any marks. If implemented, this proposal will affect as many as 930 students at Kamran MANUU Model School, as well as students at two other CBSE-affiliated schools where exams are taken in Urdu. All three schools come under the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), a central university founded in 1998 for the promotion of the Urdu language. The proposal presents a challenge for students as it may jeopardize their enrollment in higher degree courses at the Urdu university.
MANUU offers 93 courses with students pursuing
higher degrees, including doctoral and postgraduate programs, in the Urdu
medium. Restricting students to study only in Hindi and English mediums could
hinder their enrollment in these courses and defeat the purpose of establishing
the university through an Act of Parliament. The school representatives have
expressed concerns about the practicality of the proposal. They believe that
students, especially those who have studied in Urdu for the past 10-12 years,
will find it difficult to switch to writing core subjects in Hindi or English
within a short period. Additionally, the financial background of the students
may pose challenges in accessing resources required for this transition. The
representatives have also highlighted that there are numerous teachers and
professors of Urdu in the country capable of evaluating the answer sheets of
students. They have expressed hope that CBSE will understand their concerns and
address the problem pragmatically.
