CBSE issues Comprehensive Guidelines for Enhanced Accessibility for Children with Special Needs

Overview
CBSE has released detailed guidelines for children with special needs.
The updated guidelines provide detailed requirements for ramps, signage, lifts, and restrooms to accommodate the needs of Children with Special Needs (CwSN).
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a set of guidelines for Children with Special Needs (CwSN) in an official notice to all the Heads and Managers of the schools affiliated with the Board.
The Board has issued guidelines advising all CBSE affiliated schools and those seeking affiliation to comply with the revised guidelines for Children with Special Needs (CwSN).
The official notice stated that the Board has been receiving written requests from schools and discussions in various forums from the Board's stakeholders to optimize the guidelines for students with special needs studying in the schools.
The revised guidelines clearly outline the requirements for ramps, signage, lifts, and toilets to accommodate Children with Special Needs (CwSN).
The updated guidelines require the construction of a ramp on the ground floor of the school to ensure unrestricted access, along with the provision of compliant toilets for boys and girls with ample space for wheelchair or walker movement. These facilities should be available on the ground floor or any other floor where classes or practical sessions are held for students with special needs.
If the school holds classes or practical sessions for children with special needs on a floor other than the ground level, the school must ensure that there is a lift or ramp for access to those floors. Additionally, for students with visual impairments, the school should provide plates marked with pictograms (a male pictogram in a triangle and a female pictogram in a circle), along with Braille and raised alphabets, to be mounted on the wall next to the door, near the latch side, as outlined in the official notice.
It is important for schools to ensure that all toilet facilities are equipped with fire alarms featuring audio and visual systems, as outlined in the guidelines for Children with Special Needs (CwSN). Additionally, CBSE has specified that a proper ramp must be constructed to provide access to the ground floor of the school building.
